I am still here, yes, really....and upon return from India mid August I do intend to keep this up-to-date a bit more often.....yes, really.............

THE TOP 10 STOCK AITKEN WATERMAN / PWL TRACKS (in no particular order)

1. O’CHI BROWN ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’ (pull it off mix) 1985. Rick Astley had a hit with this track not long later, and there was a similar mix for that one too. Strafe’s underground ‘set it off’ groove, from which this mix derives unfortunately stayed underground here as the song was not a hit, despite this fabulous mix which was packed as a mock ‘white label’ by Magnet Records.

2. MANDY SMITH ‘I Just Can’t Wait’ (cool & breezy jazz mix) 1987. There was a really nice extended version for this song, but that has been all but ignored thanks to this cracking Balearic totally laid back remix. The mix came too late to help it into the UK top 40 singles chart however. It really is cool and breezy though, a track you can lie next to the pool and drink cocktails to. Pity I prefer climbing mountains instead.

3. DEAD OR ALIVE ‘You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) (murder mix) 1984. I can say nothing here that has not already been said about this one. Wonderful, hard hitting original 12” version of this number 1 single that really did establish SAW on that map. From the smashing glass introduction right through the next 7 minutes or so it’s a fantastic ride. The subsequent ‘performance mix’ never came anywhere near this.

4. LONNIE GORDON ‘How Could He Do This To Me’ (extended version) 1990. Criminally ignored when first recorded, this track was going to be a single at one point, but it just never happened. Thankfully included on her debut album, which has only just had a proper release well over a decade after being shelved in the UK.

5. E.G. DAILY ‘Mind Over Matter’ (remix) 1987. In the UK this came out as a double A side with the Harold Falterymeyer produced ‘Love In The Shadows’, one of my favourite tracks of all time. ‘Mind Over matter’ appeared in the US movie ‘Summer School’ and features Elizabeth Daily, the seriously under-rated voice behind Rugrats. Absolutely fabulous.

6. DEBBIE HARRY ‘In Love With Love’ (extended version)1986. Follow up to ‘French Kissing in the USA’, I much preferred this single. Sadly, like several others in this list, it missed out on the top 40.

7. CAROL HITCHCOCK ‘Get Ready’ (extended version) 1987. Yet another non-hit, which, had it been recorded in this style by any number of well-konwn names, would have shot to the top of the charts. There was a slightly different later 12” remix which did the rounds, but the original 12” mix of this old temptations hit is the best.

8. HAZELL DEAN ‘Who’s Leaving Who’ (bobs tambourine mix) 1988 (could quite easily be ‘Whatever I Do’ of course) The only problem with this track is that it just isn’t long enough. Full of drive and energy, its such a pity when it begins to fade out after a mere five minutes. I do prefer this to the iconic ‘Whatever I Do’ which of course was the major influence behind a certain other classic track further up this list.

9. KYLIE MINOGUE ‘What Do I Have To Do’ (or even ‘Hand on Your Heart’ or ‘Better The Devil You Know’) Any of the original 12” versions of these tracks will do - good, harmless, feel-good pop music. Subsequent mixes are still good, but lack the sheer insistency of the original mixes, of which the 7” versions were edits.

10. THE FOUR TOPS ‘Indestructible’ (extended version) 1988. Not actually produced by SAW but remixed by Phil Harding & Ian Curnow of the PWL so I’ve included it here. Plus I love it so it stays. A perfect example of how to turn a nice pop song into a fabulous pop song.

Well its been a busy week.....The book appeared on Tuesday so i've been busy sending out the inspection copies, organising radio appearances and the like. There have been some really kind comments so far, so lets hope that continues. The Bradford T&A ran a great story too - 'the school teacher who came clean about what he did with his dinner money all those years ago' type of thing.

Meanwhile, I've been shamed by the fit & healthy female members of staff at work into making a one off comeback in the 2011 Bradford Half Marathon in October - pain and more pain ahead methinks...the old MP3 player needs updating with some new tracks too, I'm still listening to a similar playlist to the one I blogged a few months ago.....

I might look a bit jaded here, but after having just run for over 2 hours around such delights as Top Withins and Walshaw Dean (no other human footprints around the top reservoir - good job I ddin't fall over and hurt myself - I'd still be there, whining away to myself), it was time to organise a shot for the local press. The book of course would appear in the photo but all copies still seem to be stuck in transit between the printers and their intended destinations. As yet still no sightings....

Bloody hell I'm getting keen again.

We've decided on the winner of the cover remix competition for 'Is That The 12" Mix' - which, the publishers assure me WILL be out for xmas.

News, right, let me see....

Book IS out before xmas...'Is That The 12" Mix' that is - that I've been assured by the publisher (so please go and order right now at http://www.bankhousebooks.com/usebooks.com/ ). We've had a 'remix the cover competition' - you can see the entries at http://www.robgrillo.co.uk/ - and will be announcing the winners really soon.....some amazingly good designs there, how do you choose a winner from that lot!

I've been considering writing an account of the Pennine Way trek - not a guide book but a sort of 'One Man and His Bog' account, its almost 3 decades since Barry Pulton wrote those seminal words. So I might do it, I might not do it - why, I might even get enough time to think about doing it.

Oh, and Parralox have a new album out next month....miss that and your'e a wally, OMD's new album is great and THE HUMAN LEAGUE HAVE A NEW SINGLE OUR LATER THIS MONTH AND ALBUM TO FOLLOW NEXT YEAR. How cool is that ?

And, H17's 'Penthouse and Pavement' is out in an expanded version later this month with lots of unreleased goodies on......thank god for the 80s.

Spent last night in the company of some of the finest musicians in todays electronic music scene. I missed Northern Kind's performance at the INFEST festival in Bradford but spent a great couple of hours chatting to Matt Culpin & Sarah Heeley in the bar & upstairs afterwards. During some of that time I should have been watching Parralox performing, but they have had to put their bit back to Sunday due to Amii being not very well. However, John was able to make it backstage to take part in a joint interview/debate with Matt, Jer White (aka, Afront) and Steve from 'Party Fears Three', ably compered by Chi Ming Lai, who runs The Electricity Club website http://www.electricity-club.co.uk/

Nothing like a bit of name-dropping is there, but pre-promotion for the book is important & why not spend the time with some outstanding musicians.

Days 8 & 9 - homeward bound

Thankfully no more disasters. Picked up the route again at Greenhead. For obvious reasons to those who know me well, Greenhead is a nice place to be. The next hour or so was spend on Hadrians wall - undulating to say the least. This was the busiest place yet on my trek, but enjoyed the run thoroughly. Even managed to get some video footage while 'shuffling' past the many foreign visitors. Then it was onwards through plantations, past Bellingham, and a seemingly never ending trek to Byrness, where I bivvied right on the edge of the woods. I'd stocked up with cereal bars, malt loaf & chocolate so there was no need to find food, or company, & I wanted a quick start for the final day tackling the Cheviots.

Day 9 was spent making my way to the finish. Pretty uneventful really considering recent events. There was some hill fog, but not as bad as that on Cross Fell, plus the track was fairly clear and the further into the hills I go the more people i seemed to see. The day passed remarkably quickly considering the lack of fine views, although I considered bivvying down for the night at the mountain refuge hut about 8 miles from the end. However, news that the pets were driving the boss mad back home encouraged me to make that final effort the same down - via the low level route and into Kirk Yetholm.

Strangely, there were no emotions when I reached the Border Hotel. Within minutes I had secured a lift into Kelso (I'd missed the last bus evidently), where my third evening in the open passed pleasantly (that foil blanket proved invaluable I might add). Joined 2 other campers who had ordered a taxi to Carlisle, which was much cheaper between three, so before I had even had brekky (or a wash / shower !!!!) was on me way home.........

Day 7 - near disaster !

The idea was to traverse Knock, Great Dun & Cross Fells, before heading up the South Tyne valley to Greenhead. A long one, but I was feeling up to it.

Got to top of Knock Fell & took a compass bearing in the mist. No problems there. After about half a mile couldn't see a thing (no sign of Great Dun fell where that Giant golf-ball is located) so attempted to take another compass reading. Discovered that I'd left compass (& guide book) on a rock half mile back. Wandered about aimlessly for a while, couldn't find way back to stone and there seemed no sign of any route.

Decided to go downhill to wherever downhill took me. After half an hour of negociating horrendous peat bogs and groughs I realised I still hadn't found 'downhill'

Therefore decided to follow first 'stream' I would find. I wasn't really panicking as I had bivvy tent, food, etc in case I was stranded. The 'stream' became bigger, and several confluences later was getting much bigger. It still wasn't going downhill particularly fast but after ages I did notice one or two footprints & grouse butts.

Came across an old abandoned bridge - but neither track that ran from it went 'downhill' - didn't want to take the wrong one and end up going back uphill. Therefore continued to follow stream, which had by now broadened out. Then saw a walker, just as I realised where I was - ie, following the Maize Beck. I was back on the moor between Cow Green Reservoir & High Cup Nick - by now right next to the Pennine Way . I had done this bit the day before !!!

I had passed too far of Knock Fell summit cairn and had headed back eastwards towards Teesdale, across what Paddy Dillons guide (which is probably still with my compass somewhere up there) describes as some of the wettest and most remote moorland in the country !

It had crossed my mind that if I had become 'trapped' in a bog then nobody would know that I was in trouble and even if there had been a phone signal, i'd not have really been able to descibe my whereabouts !

Anyway, descended back to Dufton for a second consecutive day - then walked to Appleby, caught a train to Carlisle, then back to Greenhead, where I was supposed to have got to by foot. Could have attempted Cross Fell again the following day, but with a forecast that suggested more mist, and now without compass, a decision had to be made.

The old abandoned footbridge was the one that the Pennine Way used to go over before being diverted to take a more direct route to High Cup Nick.

So theres a few miles of the Pennine Way I haven't trodden on, but I must have done the equivalent of that distance wandering around aimlessly and making my way to Appleby.

Days 5 & 6...looking good

Set off from Hawes at the start of day 5 feeling much better, and within half and hour had bumped into Sherrie & Graham. Great to share their company again as we made light work of Great Shunner Fell. Enjoyed a great lunch in Thwaite before the journey to Keld, where my companions were lodging for the night. I pressed on up the hill to Tan Hill. Felt surprisingly great !

Just my luck then that it was Tan Hill's busiest night ever. Lanterns on the Lake, who had just played Glastonbury were gigging there, as bands are want to do on a Saturday night. Forced therefore to bivvy down on the campsite - my tiny bivvy tent next to all those huge tents looked hilarious. Sat in the pub all night making polite conversation with all and sundry, drinking pots of tea ! Spent most of the rest of the evening listening to a group of spotty teenagers jesting arouns. They decided to go to sleep around 5am. Up at 6 - decided that as I felt good I would make a little more progress in future.

Day 6 morning therefore spend making my way to Middleton (via Baldersdale) - good running part of the way & achilles not too bad. Much better once in Teesdale - saw a family of Stoats frolicking in the grass, got some good video footage of Low & High Force waterfalls (at the latter I paid homage to all the Geography teachers who had shown their students the famous channel 4 river Tees documentary), then onto Cauldron Snout and High Cup Nick, before a quick descent into Dufton. Suddenly I'm feeling really fit & healthy !

Luckily there was a spot in the Youth Hostel where I could rest/sleep/clean myself up, where I spent much of the evening chatting with Huddersfield cyclist Steve Robinson.

Days 3 & 4

Day 3 from Gargrave to Horton In Ribblesdale was much better. Chris Tordoff chucked me out of his open top car near Gargrave & arranged to meet me on Fountains Fell. I only needed a bum bag til I picked up my heavier sack at his car which was waiting further on. Both achilles very sore, but tempered by the fact that quite by chance I bumped into one the most pleasant guys I have ever worked with - Stuart Jackson (who was also my head of year at said Greenhead School), who, along with Stuart Armitage, another pleasant soul I have known for a while, were also heading up Fountains Fell. The morning was therefore spent in excellent company as we met up with Mr Tordoff on the fell. Chris then accompanied me to the road between Fountains and Pen-Y-Gent, and after having tea he abandoned me to the elements - now armed with everything I would need for the next week or so. The climb up Pen-Y-Gent was straightforward, before I settled down for the evening at the Crown Inn at Horton In Ribblesdale.

The following day was another 'shortie' from Horton to Hawes, via Cam Fell. Completed by just after lunch, although by now left achilles very painful. Caught up with a couple I had come across the previous day, Sherrie and her lad, Graham, who provided most pleasant company in the latter stages. Hoped to be lodging at Tan Hill the following night, but after a phone call realised that I would be bivvying there instead.

Day two

It wasn't supposed to rain today - but it did ! Never mind, finished the day in much better shape than yesterday. Got up late, and Sue had to go to work so she dropped me at the other side of the valley to yesterday. That wasn't a problem as I did that short stretch last week, and run over it very regularly.

There was no way I could run today. The back is actually fine but every other part of my body aches. Last night I was probably more tired than I have ever been - it was a bloody tough day yesterday in not very pleasant conditions.

Anyway, it pissed it down atop Pinhaw, which wasn't too bad as it was nothing like Kinder yesterday. The head-cam, which packed in yesterday, decided to work above Ponden. I'd decided to try for just one more time.

Highlight of the day was meeting up with one Barry Thomas at East Marton. A friendly face if ever there was one and the mastermind behind Silsden AFC's fundraising exploits. We trotted towards Gargrave discussing the state of the economy and the state of stocks & shares. Actually thats a lie, we talked about football. And our athletic prowess.

Final night at home tonight - tomorrow I set off with a heavy rucksack, laden with everything I will need for a week on the hills. Might not be able to update until I get home, which should be in about 8 or 9 days time.

Day one..........

Stayed in a gorgeous B&B at Edale last night - Western House, just a mere footstep from the start. I really would recommend it !! Early evening meal in the Old Nags Head, which is the official start of the trek.

And then the fun began. 40 plus miles completed. ‎Far too much really. 11 hours of swimming through peat bogs, pissing rain before lunch and big climbs up Kinder Scout, Bleaklow & Black Hill. Very very sore. Very very tired. Wiped out. Kinder in the mist is not a pleasant experience- only one navigational error, which involved having to climb back up a steep hill face.

Need to take it a bit easier tomorrow !

One Week And Counting !!

Only a week to go. All kit accounted for, new whistle purchased (£3-49, and I got a keyring free with it). All systems go....almost. One final, ever so slight hiccup is the bad back. It has been getting gradually worse over the past few weeks but this weekend has been a little painful. Luckily (and this is very lucky), Mrs. G is a trained aromatherapist and is able to ease the problem with daily massage. Should therefore be raring to go next Tuesday.....

Barry Thomas is aiming to complete part of day 2 with me. He has endured heart attacks, heart-by-pass operations, a hip replacement & my bad jokes over the past few years and is hoping to complete a 10K section roughly from Thornton -in-Craven to Gargrave. He is worried that he will not be able to run fast enough...I have ensured him that as this will be at the end of day 2 he will probably be the faster of the two of us. Barry, a great guy, has been the mastermind behind much of the funding that Silsden AFC have managed to raise for their ground work (which has begun in earnest I may add).

Anyway, over £800 raised so far and money still coming in........hopefully closer to £1K by this time next week......

Pennine Way trek - update

Less than 4 weeks to go now until kick off. Or is that run-off ?

I have just about started to pack some stuff:
Ultra-lightweight bivvy tent
Lightweight sleeping bag
First aid kit (blister plasters included)
Maps (OS 1:25000) – all of them
Flask
Water pouch and tube (1.5 litres)
Rucksack x2 (one for first couple of lightweight days, one for rest of journey)
Waterproof sacks
Waterproof Rucksack cover
Guide book (newly revised one)
Mp3 players x 2 (tiny one for first 2 days – bigger noe with zillions of songs on for rest of journey)
Whistle & compass
White Chocolate bars x 11 (one for each day plus an extra one in case I get greedy)

Clothes – not done yet !

Head cam on its way (A TV/Film Production company is doing a documentary thingie)

Day 1 will be the 38 miles from Edale, and terminating at The White House at Blackstone Edge. That’s going to be the longest day, have scaled down the first three days a little in order not to get myself too knackered over the first few days. Should allow me to finish in 10 days too.

Apart from having a bad back, 2 dodgy calves, a sore ankle and creaking knees, training continues to go well. Tackled the Yorkshire Three Peaks in hideous weather, then 4 hours running the other week - both with a full rucksack, so stamina is improving.
Sponsor money continues to flood in - £700 plus so far……getting closer to that magical 1K figure.

Get Your Free World Cup Wallchart Here (not)

The World Cup is less than two weeks ago and every newspaper, periodical & supermarket is givingaway a free World Cup Wallchart (a great source of revenue these days for the media). No doubt tens of thousands of us have them up in the office, the classroom, or even the kitchen. We fill them in religiously, ensuring that no game is missed out - all the half time scores diligently noted, and mathematical equations mulled over and over; working out who will play who if team A beats team B by three goals or more in their final group game.

And then England get knocked out. Usually around the quarter-final stage.

The real result. We stop filling in our wallcharts. They are torn down, or just neglected for a week or so until the World Cup is over. We can no longer be bothered, the pain of our inglorious defeat (on penalties to Portugal or Germany or someone along those lines) ensures that any thought of completing that glossy A3 sheet is pushed to the back of our minds.

I hope every local council has made arrangements for an efficient disposal of each and every wallchart. Wallchart disposal bins should be placed at the end of each street within minutes of the final whistle at Englands' final game. Recycling boxes need to be emptied earlier, and landfill sites should be open an extra hour to cater for the glossier ones that can't be mushed and made into new paper.

Then again, England could win the World Cup (not very likely I know, we're just not good enough), in which case ten thousand lofts will be filled with fully completed wallcharts along with the inevitable 'Victory Special' pull-outs produced by those very same newspapers and magazines.

Either way, I really can't wait........

ITINERARY - THE FIRST 3 DAYS

Itinerary for the first 3 days of the Pennine Way trek. The idea is to start very early each day, run in the morning & then take it much easier in the afternoon. Much chocolate (of the white variety) will be sampled en-route.
Day 1 - 38 miles - Edale to The White House at Blackstone Edge (sleep at home)
Day 2 - 36 miles - Blackstone Edge to Gargrave (sleep at home)
Day 3 - 37 miles - Gargrave to Hawes (with lunch at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, friends most welcome to tuck-in) - sleep in B&B or in tent !
From day 4 I start to (a) suffer & (b) take it a little easier, (c) make use of the tent & stove.

End Of An Era

Silsden bring to a close a seven year stint at Keighley RLFC's Cougar Park this weekend. Thanks to the professional rugby club, the town has seen its first pyramid football team, as well as its first ever FA Cup ties as Silsden have attempted to reach Wembley each season (they haven't quite made it yet, but we can all wish can't we). Winsford United are the visitors for the final time before the local club seeks pastures new.

Well not exactly pastures new, most of you reading this will know that they are desperately trying to raise funds to return to their proper 'home' at Keighley Road, Silsden. in the meantime a short-term groundshare may be necessary next season (most likely at Colne FC) as money is raised for floodlights, hard-standing and the like as per league rules.

While Keighley Cougars themselves have not exactly been the best of hosts this season, I reall can't fault the North West Counties and Lancashire Leagues for helping Silsden when things were looking very dire indeed. The former have allowed the club more than a little leeway in what needs doing at Keighley Road in order to give them a chance to get the ground up to scratch, while the Lancashire League -in which the reserves play -have, actually allowed home games to be played at Keighley Road already. Good on 'em !

Also - NOW ONLY THREE MONTHS UNTIL MY PENNINE WAY TREK ! Training going really well !

A few other tracks that have graced my headphones over the past couple of weeks. Not all of them 12” mixes but each and every one of them most welcome when I’m in need of inspiration and motivation high up in moor and dale.

1. Talk Talk ‘Its My Life’ (Steve Thompson US Mix)
One of the best remixes of any song ever. I go on about this track in my forthcoming book. Forget the regular UK 12” mix, this one is utterly wonderful.
2. Dead or Alive ‘You Spin Me Round’ (Murder Mix)
Stock Aitken Waterman’s finest - their first, and best, number one tune that is simply irrestistible in this extended mix. To avoid any possible confusion caused by erroneous track listings on some cds, this is the version with the sound of glass shattering at the start.
3. Sade ‘Paradise’ (extended version)
I was first blown-away by this in a record shop in Greece. One amazing groove & an absolutely fantastic improvement in its 12” version. Get your kit prepared, headphones ready and sunglasses on and chill out to this.
4. Martika ‘Spirit’
Originally planned as a single, with a couple of inferior remixes ready to be released on 12”, it was eventually shelved. A pity as the regular album version is possibly Martika’s finest four minutes.
5. The Javells ‘Goodbye Nothing To Say’
One of two Northern Soul classic here, a real feel-good tune that makes you forget just how tired you are !
6. General Public ‘Tenderness’ (extended version)
From the ‘Weird Science’ soundtrack, and never a hit in the UK, a lost tune from the 80s.
7. Dobie Gray ‘Out On The Floor’
Or ‘Out in the hills’ when I hear it on my mp3 player! The second Northern Soul tune on this list. They don’t make songs like this any more.
8. Mandy Smith ‘I Just Can’t Wait’ (Cool & Breezy Jazz Mix)
Stock Aitken & Waterman proved with this one that they had much more depth to their talents than mere bubblegum pop. A Balearic classic in this format, which really is cool and breezy.
9. Marillion ‘Assassing’ (full length version)
Simply brilliant, exciting rock that, surprisingly, does sit well alongside all the dance music on your mp3 player.
10. Debbie Gibson ‘Red Hot’
80s bubble-gum pop from her debut album. Never released as a single but a really chirpy tune to run along to.
11. Change ‘You Are My Melody’ (12" version)
Less well known follow up to their smash ‘Change of Heart’. Produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, which is why it sounds exactly like the SOS Band.

Sometimes you just know its not going to be your day. Turn up at Cougar Park to discover that Keighley Cougars have not tidied up after their last home game (some 4 days ago) - therefore (a) piles and piles of empty plastic beer bottles, ticker tape, crisp packets, and the like, and (b) Silsden's opponents, Ramsbottom United, have had to clean their own changing rooms before they can get in. Lovely.

That was the good news. Now I've been heavily critisised in the past for defending referees, but bloody hell this one had a shocker. One lad given a straight red for disagreeing with one of his decisions, another asked to leave the field for two 'bookable' offences. And I mean 'bookable' in the loosest possible way here. Everybody and anybody associated with Silsden seemed to get booked today. Even Margaret, who was busy selling raffle tickets. He wasn't pleased with her. We lost, and the referee will probably be fast-tracked into the football league at double-quick pace.

And then, the idiot, or is that moron from Ramsbottom. Lovely club, nice officials, cracking little ground they have. But him. Mr.Officious. He's the chairman (I think) of Ramsbottom, not Barcelona. 'Well I'll have to report the club for this, for that, and the other, and in fact anything and everything in between' he told me. Well thanks for that. Luckily the league are aware of our plight. May the same thing happen to his club one day !

Still. Went for a run today. Ran up Pisser Hill and across Pisser Clough. That amused me. Try finding those on a map.

The six minute 12” mix they promoted when it was released here in the UK. The best example of how a top quality remix can make a good tune sound even better. Accept no other mix.
2...Amii Stewart ‘Friends’ (original 12” mix)
Lush, laid back and utterly cool. No point listening to this unless it’s this full length version. The one problem is has it that it eventually has to end.
3...Goldfrapp ‘Slide In’ (DFA remix)
A fantastic, meandering, lengthy remix from one of todays finest acts! Love those cowbells !
4...Fiction Factory ‘All or Nothing’ (extended version)
One hit wonders, this was one of the brilliant, and ultimately unsuccessful, follow up to (Feels Like) Heaven.
5...New Order ‘The Perfect Kiss’
I fell over & broke my arm listening to this track a few years back. There was nothing better to do than pick my self up & continue the run, such was the quality of music coming through the headphones.
6...Electronic ‘Getting Away With It’ (extended version)
Bernard Sumner meets Johnny Marr, with Neil Tenant thrown in for good measure. The result could not be any more brilliant.
7...Pet Shop Boys ‘Pandemonium’
Fantastic album track from their latest album. Ten years ago this would have been a huge hit single.
8...OMD ‘Telegraph’
This lot have a new album out later this year. I’ve heard bits already – it deserves to be huge.
9...Michael Jackson ‘Thriller’ (DMX mix)
An amazing DMC remix with added dialogue. Makes you want to run faster to get away from the terror………
10...Matia Bazar ‘Ti Sento’
The Italians love to be melodramatic, and this is nothing short of what you would expect. One of Chris Lowe (Pet Shop Boys) favourite tunes, evidently.
11...Spagna ‘Easy Lady’ (extended mix)
Ivana Spagna’s first huge worldwide hit that wasn’t actually a hit in the UK!
12...T-Empo ‘Saturday Night, Sunday Morning’
Awesome, building underground dance tune from the 1990s.
13...Time Bandits ‘Endless Road’ (extended version)
Europop as it was in the 1980s. It doesn’t get much better than this.
14...Pamela Hernandez ‘Kickin’ In The Beat’ (dancing divas mix)
The 90s at their best. At the time I would buy any single if it had a dancing divas mix. This is undoubtedly their best.
15...Lisa ‘Rocket To Your Heart’ (almighty mix)
Fantastic updated mix of a huge underground 80’s dance hit.
16...Heaven 17 ‘Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry’ (parts 1 & 2)
Martyn Ware has just done the foreword to my next book, so I would love these wouldn’t I. Sounds as superb now as it did way back in 1983.
17...The Human League ‘Hard Times’
An almost forgotten gem that brightens up any Saturday morning trek across the moors. Hard times ? Not for five minutes listening to this track.
18...Stephanie ‘One Love to Give’ (extended remix)
Princess Stephanie of Monaco. Enjoyed a brief singing career in the 1980s. This is actually a damn fine track.
19...Dollar ‘Give Me Back My Heart’
Cheese, cheese, cheese and yet more cheese. Trevor Horn on the mix. Not surprising really, given the brilliantly over-the-top melodrama of it all.
20...Cock Robin ‘The Promise You Made’ (extended remix)
How to make a track that you can’t dance to into a track that you can dance to without actually taking anything away from the original.
21...Marsheaux ‘Dream Of a Disco’
Greece’s finest export. Marianthi and Sophie deserve to be huge. This deserves to be huge.
22...Parralox ‘Sharper Than A Knife’
…..and so does this. From their first album. The original, and arguably, the best of many different versions released a couple of years back.
23...EG Daily ‘Love In The Shadows’ (specially remixed version)
The long extended mix that appeared on 12” in the 80s. Elizabeth Daily was, as you would have it, the voice behind the Rugrats on TV.

One can only apologise (yet again) for not updating. Ian Robinson is not a happy man. 'Get it sorted' he says. Well, the book is closer to completion. Just working on a little redrafting before Bank House Books put the final touches to 'Is That The Twelve Inch Mix'. ITV have finally got round to giving permission to use 'The Venus Hunters' image....so things are now moving fast !

On top of that there's the training for July/August - knee, groin & calf problems have hampered things a little. Is that due to old age or being a finely tuned athlete ? Two hours or so to fit in this morning, before a visit to Steeton FC and their top of the table league match with Salts.

Great stuff this snow. Three days off work thus far...so a chance to get some training done, and at the same chance do a few good deeds.

It sounded simple, run all the way to Keighley sorting office to pick up the post for the tiny hamlet I live in. It was great getting there, trapesing through virgin snow until I got to the road at Oakworth, then heading gingerly down the hill to Keighley. The problem started once I realised just how much post I had to get back home in my rucksack. Catalogues....they were the ones that did the damage, flaming women's catalogues. One is bad enough, but a few of them, well it makes the pull back up the hill painful in more ways than one. It took me 40 minutes to get there, something like 4 hours to get back (well, maybe a little less than that).

No worries, a shiny new cd for yours truly was included in that rather heavy package.....another synthy electro one from Cassette Electrik. Still waiting for the one that Oblique promised me about 3 months ago though.

Well, more snow forecast for tonight, so possibly another day off tomorrow. Fully intend to get a couple of hours done if I get that phone call. Really hope there's no snow Friday evening though, as I have a guest appearance on the Radio Leeds breakfast show first thing Saturday morning. There's no way I'm running all the way there in this weather !

Commencing Tuesday 27th July 2010

In aid of Silsden AFC’s ‘Football’s Coming Home’ appeal

Commencing July 27th I’m undertaking one hell of sponsored run - the 268 mile Pennine Way, from Edale (Derbyshire) to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland. The intention is to crack it in 10 days – thereby completing on average over a marathon each day. Mad? Of course I am.

In recent years I’ve climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, trekked to Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas and tackled high mountain passes in the Alps, raising money for various charities around the world, but this year I wanted to do something a little closer to home.

Therefore I thought it only fair that I raised money for an important local sporting cause this time. As I’ve written extensively in the past about (and followed religiously) local sport, then it seems apt to go local.

Silsden AFC’s senior team is desperate to return home to its Keighley Road ground in the village. They are the first Keighley side ever to play in the football pyramid, and to enter the FA Cup. This is due partly to the generosity of Keighley Cougars RLFC who have allowed them to play at Cougar Park for the past six seasons. It has now come to the stage, however, in the current economic climate, that unless Silsden return ‘home’ they will be unable to compete at their current level. The club already runs dozens of junior teams from under 8’s through to under 17’s which compete in local leagues. These are all based at the Keighley Road playing fields in Silsden.

I’ll therefore be tackling the Pennine Way in order to help raise money for the club to install, floodlights, hard standing, perimeter fencing at Keighley Road. This resource will not only benefit the club, but will be valuable asset for Keighley’s sporting public. £40,000 is the money needed to help the club realise their ambition – hopefully some of it will come from this sponsored event!

I’ll be running the first two days (and sleeping at home for the first two nights !), but from day 3 will be armed with a lightweight tent and stove, and intend to take it a little more sedately. Many friends & colleagues – including local sportsmen and women, several local musicians and the leader of Bradford Council - have already pledged their support and will be joining me for small sections.

I Wish I Could Dance As Well As That

Tonight shindig has to be among my top 5 gigs ever, and I've been to a few - purely because it was like 2 sensational gigs in one.

Support act: Bad Lieutenant - or rather three quarters of New Order's latter line up with a couple of others. Would have gone home happy even had they been the only act. 'Temptation', as usual, was phenomenal. Barney was his usual low key self, Mr Morris banged away on his drum kit - and his keyboard on tracks like 'Bizarre love Triangle, and we rocked away.

Main act: Pet Shop Boys. Anyone who has seen them will know of their amazing stage show. They didn't disappoint ! To cite one of their albums - it was 'relentless', nearly 2 hours of feel good poptastic tunes with some of the most amazing dancing from their 4 sidekicks. Mr Lowe did his thing as he does best and even had time for a quick dance before ensconcing himself back behind his box. And a surprise, and much much welcomed duettist on 'What Have I Done To Deserve This'.

Almost missed BL as we were stuck on the M62 for rather a long time.

Oh, and I shouldn't have done that 3 hour run the day before....could hardly move me legs afterwards.

And History Doesn't Repeat Itself

Silsden 0 Newcastle Town 2....two late late goals ensure that Newcastle go back down Stoke way with their 23rd consecutive league win this season. And their manager / his assistant/ their players didn't put a foot wrong for 90 minutes ! Do't think they'll be back....deservedly on their way to the Unibond.

And to make matters worse I've got an horrific cold. Unable to do a long run. No worries, 3 hours instead next weekend.

And even worse, should be a little worried that my cheek is still swollen five days after my visit to the dentist ? It took nearly 12 hours for my face to become unparalized. All that for 2 fillings.

So, the new book. Nothing at all to do with sport. Out spring, so no point asking you to order it in time for this xmas. 'Is That The Twelve Inch Mix'. All about people obsessed with 80s music, with a history of the remix and the 12 inch single thrown in for good measure.

A more pressing matter, however. We're out of ibuprofen, paracetamol AND blackcurrant flavour beechams powders.....

Don't Let It Happen Again

Sorry. No blog for a few days. Didn't know you cared. Well maybe one or two do.

Predictions please. Newcastle Town visit Silsden this weekend. They've won 22 out of 22 in the league. However, each and every time they visit, two things happen:

1. Their manager gets sent off
2. They lose

Can't wait. Mighty Silsden have lost one out of their last 7 (and that a 5-6 cup defeat, after extra time to Bradford Park Avenue, some two leagues higher). All that since the mercenaries left for other clubs who would pay them lots more money. You are all most welcome to come see the proceedings...only a fiver (plus a quid for a damn fine programme), 3pm....Cougar Park (well, we can't have everything can we).....among the masses. We had something like 86 paying spectators last week. Thats including season ticket holders like myself.

One wonders whether I should bother with Walshaw Dean this weekend, maybe somewhere a little safer - don't want to miss the match - or the Pet Shop Boys on the 20th. Did I mention that ? Or the music book...out next spring.

Is that ok, can I go now ?

From Here to Oblivion

Another careful couple of hours around Walshaw Dean's three reservoirs. Plenty to ponder. The likelihood of being found alive if I had tumbled into the catchwater drain that runs alongside the top reservoir was definately something to consider carefully. It was swollen and no amount of emergency rations or bumbag contents would have prevented being swept to oblivion. For those who don't know it, the permissive path that runs between the top reservoir and that drain is very narrow, and the bracken makes it difficult to know where you're putting your foot. I just happened, to (almost) make a slight error of judgement there.

More to think about. That jumble of running, cheesy music and non-league fooball that swirls around my head several zillion times per second. How the hell can Silsden get a result today against a team that went to Wembley last season. Another lad has left, 2 on holiday in Vegas and a key midfielder suspended. Thats on top of the ten or so that have followed their noses - and the money - to other clubs.

And then there's the book. Scheduled for spring but no sign of any amendments to do yet. Thats worrying, there's always things to change. No doubt there'll be a mad rush that starts around Xmas Eve and finishes sometime around New Years Eve. What will the wife say ? Maybe the catchwater drain was a safer option.

As it happens, I didn't even turn the mp3 on. Such was the fulfillment of running around one of my favourite routes. Parralox would have to wait ('State of Decay', new album, out now, if you haven't bought it then you're missing out), as would Dan Hartman. Bumped into a rather pleasant party of schoolkids running back over Top Withins. Not just that, polite and with a sense of humour.

And the, against the odds, Silsden got a point in a thoroughly entertaining draw against Glossop at Cougar Park.

Well the offending calf stood up to 2 hours of bog trotting across Oakworth Moor on Saturday morning, albeit well strapped up. Amazing how you can be stood in 3 counties at the same time up there. Would have been even better if visibility had been anything near 10 yards. As it was I only knew that Keighley Moor reservoir was there (a) the geese were particularly vocal on this occasion, and (b)because I know it's there.

And then Silsden FC won their third successive match to make the day pretty damn perfect. Bradford Park Avenue coming up in 10 days time. A huge Cup tie for Park Avenue.

If only the damn thing (the calf) had not gone again Sunday morning. Silly really. Speed up just a little to avoid a dozen calves (the baby cow type) in a field, and the calf (the annoying part of the lower leg type) goes again. Woe is me.

Wanted

One left calf muscle. Preferably in fine shape. Had problems with the old calves for a few years now, but have been going so well of late that I've not bothered with calf supports. Half way into a 2 hour run, at the furthest point from home and there's a tug...hobbled home...and then it seized up. Hence no run today.

Sorry for what might seem like a blatant hard sell here, but I need to share this. Ever sat in your car listening to your favourite cd, knowing full well that you should have been in work doing your stuff several minutes ago? More than a few minutes ago in fact. It's happened three times this week already - three different albums, all from the 80s, two of which were largely ingnored by the record buying public. Martin Fry is responsible for two of them - him and Mark White. ABC's Alphabet City did do rather well, but the lush melodies were just too good to turn off, 'Minneapolis' - played it twice in a row. Three minutes of utter beauty. Then there was 'Up'. ABC's take on the house music scene at the time. It bombed at the time. It's beautiful. And then The Adventures - 'Theodore and Friends', no hit singles but an album you can play, and enjoy, and continue playing, and continue enjoying as the kids are waiting in your class wondering where the bloody hell their Geography teacher is.........

Sorry, its late........

It really was such a perfect day. Almost 2 and a half hours off-road in the morning - and not a single sighting of any member of the infamous Keighley & Craven AC. Just the single buzzard looking for lunch in Walshaw Dean. The weather improved by the minute, and by lunch the sun was out. Could have run all day.

Come the afternoon - the signs were not good. The PA wasn't working at Cougar Park, so no ABBA for the players to come out to. Good job I forgot the Hazell Dean cd. The miserable tea lady had left only 3 biscuits for half time refreshments for the officials & important people (so instead I nabbed the remaining tea bags to distribute to the crowd for the second half).

So what would you expect to happen when Silsden -without a clean sheet all season - take on unbeaten Congleton Town. You've guessed it, Silsden win 1-0 in one of the most exciting & tense games seen in town for a long time. Who needs premier league football when you can, for a fraction of the cost (my season ticket only set me back £70) watch a bunch of talented lads, who play, not for the money (although the little they do get does help, I'm sure) but because they actually want to play for their local club.

It's such a perfect dayyyyyy.....

Too Many Cooks ?

It was a rare Saturday afternoon this week. Blessed with a bad back (far too much running this week) I took the opportunity to follow Silsden’s exploits away at Glossop via Lost In Barrow’s mobile, twitter, and the voice of Drystone Radio – Sir Jim Rosser. Silsden lost by a single goal, but overall it was an awful week for the areas top local clubs.

On paper it looks great – Silsden flying the flag in the football pyramid, with no less than 5 other Keighley district clubs plying their trade in the 2nd tier of county standard amateur football – unheard of in the past. Well done lads.

Steeton’s manager Roy Mason did query at the start of the season whether there were enough quality players in town to fill 5 teams (plus Silsden reserves in their tough league) playing such high a level and it seems he could be spot on. His Steeton side, on paper, with their plethora of decent ex-Silsden players lost at home again in the County Amateur league, with a Shamrocks side full of youngsters also losing – heavily- in the same division. Oxenhope continue to slide down the West Yorkshire league, losing to Nostell’s second string, while Crosshills’ poor campaign just gets worse – they shipped 17 at Crooklands in the West Lancashire league. Hopefully they are well enough established club to survive their troubles, but at what level ?

The only bright moments this Saturday were victories for Bronte Wanderers, dark horses for promotion this season, and the youngsters of Silsden’s second string, who defeated high flying Eccleshill United.

The local team causing the most ripples is Craven league side Long Lee. They have defeated 2 County Amateur sides (including Steeton) this season already. What if they decide to move up to county league standard next season (and who would blame them?)

Is it a case of too many cooks or was I being a trifle too giddy hoping for promotion for the likes of Oxenhope, Steeton and Bronte at the start of the season. Its great to have local sides playing at a higher level than ever but are there enough players to go round ?

I wouldnt normally make a big deal of buying a cd that has on it 14 tracks that I already own - but today is an exception. Hazell Dean's greatest hits. Played it twice already. I have to play new cds twice before I file them in the appropriate spot in one of my cd cabinets - call in some form of OCD if you will.

So what is so special about this particular greatest hits package. Nothing...but I had to buy it. It's where I got it that matters. A new shop in Keighley ! A new record shop (or cd shop as they don't really sell records) in the town that Bill Bryson would love to have seen shelled many moons ago by the British Army. The opening of any new record (sorry, cd) shop in any part of the world should be treat with rejoicing and much merriment the world over. It didn't matter which cd I bought in 'Spin', I just had to go through the process of buying one just for the sheer hell of it in a new record (.....cd) shop in my part of the world. Could be the start of things to come......could new independent music stores be on their way back ???

I'll take my new £3 purchase along to Silsden FC's next home game (next Wednesday, v Glasshoughton Welfare in the County Cup). Jim Rosser might play it on the PA before the game. He's stopped bringing his ABBA cds - there was something very camp about the players coming out - if you forgive the pun - to the delights of 'Dancing Queen' & 'Gimme Gimme Gimme (a man after midnight).

RAIN, RAIN, RAIN & A BIT MORE RAIN THROWN IN FOR GOOD MEASURE

Great life being a runner. There I am at Cougar Park watching Silsden huff & puff to a 3-1 victory over bottom of the league Abbey Hey. Not a drop of rain, really quite warm and a lovely blue sky to boot. Rewind a few hours to Saturday morning. My infamous Pennine Way trek begins on July 27th 2010 so its necessary to familiarise myself with the odd bit close to home that I'm unfamiliar with. So there I am, setting off from Hebden Bridge, heading over to Colden, Heptonstall Moor and finally Widdop - with the intention of returning the same way. Should have listened to the weatherman. Visibility down to minus 10 yards, a complete whiteout, and wet, very very wet. Heptonstall Moor is sodden at the best of times, today it is even more unappealing as I plough through hoping to catch a glimpse of Gorple reservoirs somewhere up in front. No headphones today, just rain. And cloud. And me. And the mobile, which least provides some comfort as the sound of Northern Kind signals the delivery of a text from little brother. Result. Bad Lieutenant are supporting The Pet Shop Boys in December. Jolly ho.

It's still raining though. And the bridge has been washed away at Graining Water just below Gorple (the reservoirs were there, evidently). The water might be a little threatening, but its a safe crossing. When you resemble the most drowned of rats the icy flow makes little difference. Once on the familiar Widdop road there's very little incentive to head back the same way. So its back along the road to Heptonstall - a really pleasant run when you can see something. Its alleged that Hardcastle Crags lie below, and the area is rather pretty any other day of the year.
